The Dunkirk Historical Museum is an institution dedicated to the promotion of the city's historical, cultural and artistic heritage. The museum stores, collects, and exhibits artwork, photographs, sculptures, and historical objects. Become a member.

It provides arts programs to its diverse cultural and ethnic community. These programs including artistic expressions focusing on storytelling, quilting, painting, photography, puppetry, pottery, dancing and music, all of these seeking to improve the community's quality of life.

The photograph collection contains well over 15,000 images.

The museum has a number of objects connected with wars beginning with the Spanish American War to the Vietnam War. A highlight of the collection is the Civil War military uniform and sword.

The Brooks Locomotive Works collection includes a great many objects, documents and photographs of the Brooks Locomotive Works, later the American Locomotive Company (ALCO). This includes work tools, a firefighting apparatus from the plant, the plaque commemorating the death of Brooks founder Horatio G. Brooks, photographs, documents, and other ephemera. The Museum also operates the ALCO/Brooks Railroad Display, located at the Chautauqua County Fairgrounds on Central Avenue (accessible from Walldorf Road), about a mile from the museum.

Mission Statement
The aims of the Society shall be to aid in the preservation of historical sites and landmarks; to help in the development and preservation of local history, including the family histories of pioneers, early settlers, and citizens of Dunkirk; to acquire and save for public use and exhibition all relics, pictures, maps and articles of historic value dealing with the economic, political, patriotic and cultural life of the community; to aid, encourage and promote the Dunkirk Historical Museum.
