The Marvin House is a stunning example of E. G. W. Dietrich’s “Shingle style” architecture; it seamlessly blends elements from the Art Nouveau, Arts and Crafts, and Eastlake styles. Vastly different design styles intermingle with one another to produce an environment of enchantment enjoyed by the upper class during the early 1900’s.”
Robert N. Marvin considered the corner of Fifth Street and North Main Street to be a prime location. It had many features that would enhance Mr. and Mrs. Marvin’s position in the community. Fifth Street, sitting at the cusp of North Main Street, was a “parade street” lined with the large homes of prominent Jamestown families. In 1897 Mr. Marvin purchased the property and the small, eight room farmhouse.
The transformation from farmhouse to mansion was orchestrated by the renowned architect E.G. W. Dietrich of New York City. The Marvin's had three resources at their disposal; wealth, materials and knowledge, all of which Mr. Dietrich employed masterfully. Mr. Marvin had financial interest in lumber and Mrs. Marvin’s father specialized in building materials made from lumber making it possible for the architect to use woods more representative of fine furniture-making than residential woodwork.
