The Cinema Series at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center continues with the WWII biopic “Lee” on Sat., Oct. 26, and Tues., Oct. 29, at 7:30 p.m.

“Lee” portrays a pivotal decade in the life of American war correspondent and photographer, Lee Miller (Kate Winslet). Miller’s singular talent and unbridled tenacity resulted in some of the 20th century’s most indelible images of war, including an iconic photo of Miller herself, posing defiantly in Hitler’s private bathtub. Miller had a profound understanding and empathy for women and the voiceless victims of war. Her images display both the fragility and ferocity of the human experience. Above all, the film shows how Miller lived her life at full-throttle in pursuit of truth, for which she paid a huge personal price, forcing her to confront a traumatic and deeply buried secret from her childhood.

The (London) Observer calls the film “a vivid and unforgettable tribute to one of the bold women who devoted her life to the penetration of male dominance to change the way we see the world. Don’t even think about missing it.” The Tribune News Service calls it “penetrating.” Empire Magazine calls it “a handsomely made, moving biopic of a subject who deserves to be honored – with stellar chemistry and performances from Kate Winslet and Andy Samberg.” Rated R for for disturbing images, language and nudity, “Lee” runs one hour, 57 minutes.

Tickets are available at the door for $7 (adults), $6.50 (seniors & Opera House members) and $5 (students) the night of each screening. The Opera House is equipped with assistive listening headsets for the hearing-impaired. Simply request one from any usher or staff member. The Opera House Cinema Series is generously sponsored by Lake Shore Savings Bank.
