The Cinema Series at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center continues with the moving “Sing Sing” on Sat., Oct. 19, and Tues., Oct. 22, at 7:30 p.m.

Divine G (Colman Domingo), imprisoned at “Sing Sing” for a crime he didn’t commit, finds purpose by acting in a theatre group with other incarcerated men. When a wary outsider joins the group, the men decide to stage their first original comedy, in this stirring true story of resilience, humanity, and the transformative power of art, starring an unforgettable ensemble cast of formerly incarcerated actors.

The Boston Globe calls the film “a beautiful film, a must-see that showcases the true power of the empathy machine we call the movies.” The Arizona Republic calls it “real and raw.” The San Francisco Chronicle calls it “the best film this year.” The Toronto Globe & Mail says the film is “as big, immersive and knock-down-drag-out impressive a vehicle as any leading performer could possibly hope for. And Domingo makes an absolute five-course meal out of it.” Rated R for very strong language throughout, “Sing Sing” runs one hour, 47 minutes.

Tickets are available at the door for $7 (adults), $6.50 (seniors & Opera House members) and $5 (students) the night of each screening. The Opera House is equipped with assistive listening headsets for the hearing-impaired. Simply request one from any usher or staff member. The Opera House Cinema Series is generously sponsored by Lake Shore Savings Bank.

The 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center is a member-supported not-for-profit performing arts center with a mission to “present the performing arts for the benefit of our community and region … providing access to artistic diversity … and high-quality programming at an affordable price.” It is located in Village Hall in downtown Fredonia.
